The last 6 months have been an
amazing experience for Justin
Chung—from being a Flight
Instructor teaching spins in Van-
couver’s Glen Valley Practice
Area, to becoming a First Officer
with an Airline, flying the Saab 340
along routes throughout British
Columbia. Justin is the third
Langley Flying School graduate
to be hired by Pacific Coastal
Airlines in the last two years,
and for Justin, things happen very
fast: call for employment interview
on January 31st, simulator eval-
uation on February 17th, offer for
employment on the 18th, ground
school on company and aircraft
operations between March 3 and
19th, and simulator training leading
to type rating on March 29th.
Justin describes his first opera-
tional flight from Vancouver to
Cranbrook as incredible: “All I
can remember is being wide-
eyed, amazed at how everything
was happening really fast—it
was hard to keep your mind
organized on all the things that
had to be done on the ground
during the pre-flight.” “But once
we lined up on the runway”, says
Justin, “everything just ‘clicked’,
and the SOPs begin to flow.”
“At first,” says Justin, “the short
flights were tough, because there
was so much to get done in what
appeared then as a very short
period of time—but now the
short flights are fun, going 250
KTS over the Georgia Strait—there is nothing quite like it.”
Justin began flying in 2002 and completed his First Solo Flight on April 24, 2003. He finished his Private Pilot Licence in
October of 2003 with Peter Waddington, and completed his Commercial Pilot Licence and Group 1 (Multi-engine)
Instrument Rating in September and December of 2004, respectively, under the supervision of David Woollam. Justin completed his Flight Instructor Rating with David Parry in August of 2006, and received his Senior Instructor appointment in 2007. Justin was the youngest Flight Instructor to head Langley Flying School’s IFR program.
Looking reflectively at his career thus far, Justin says the key has been hard work and perseverance. “I remember many days studying for 8 hours in the classroom at the back of the school.” What was really important was the chatting I did with other commercial students who were studying at that time—Sawatzky, Aboulhosn, Gahan, Orlowski, Worth, and Pillay—we motivated each other—the guys that were just ahead of you in the program provided lots of inspiration.”
