Flight Operations Safety Threats List

The list below comprise a list of threats to the safety of Langley Flying School's Flight Training Operations, and summarize the remedial measures in place to minimize those threats.

Midair Collisions in Fraser Valley flight training practice areas

Threat Level: High

Remedial Measures:

  1. Verbal confirmation during dual instruction that the airspace has been cleared visually for traffic in the direction of turn prior to executing a turn.
  2. Verbal confirmation during climbs and descents that airspace has been cleared visually for traffic above or below prior to executing a climb or descent.
  3. Departure climb practices requiring gentle yet effective regular turns turns to clear for traffic ahead during prolonged climbs.
  4. Web-based near-miss reporting system for students and staff.
  5. Open web-based anonymous safety reporting.
  6. Airspace safety advocy by the Chief Flying Instructor with Nav Canada, Transport Canada, and the Transportation Safety Board for improved open airspace access and safety for flight training.

Remedial Measures:

  1. Cross-wind limits posted on individual student training records.
  2. High-speed S-turn training during pre-solo dual instuction.
  3. Ease of pre-solo release checkflights by Flight Instructors.
