How to go to Chilliwack for pie . .
At least one hour before departure, contact the Kamloops FIC, get a briefing, and file two flight plans, the flight plan to exit CYR 185, and the one to return through CYR 185 for Langley.
The flight plans should specify the routes as follows: “Langley Airport direct Mission” is the routing for the outbound flight plan, and “Mission direct LangleyAirport” is the routing for the inbound flight plan.
Treat CYR 185 like an outer controller, similar to the arrangement at Abbotsford Airport. After clearing the zone at Langley, contact “Vancouver Monitor” on frequency 124.67 MHz (the frequency is actually 124.675 MHz, but don’t worry if your radio does not display the third decimal place—provided the last digit displayed on your radio includes 2 and 7, you are capable of 25 KHZ communications—AIM, 5.3).
When you are clear of the 30 NM ring (CYR 185), contact Pacific Radio on frequency 122.5 (Abbotsford) or 126.7 MHz to close your flight plan—you are now free to fly, . . . well, freely.
Then, when you are ready to return to Langley, you must contact Pacific Radio to activate your flight plan 15 minutes prior to entering CYR 185—tell them they have your plan on file and the time at which you are estimating Mission. When you make this call, Pacific Radio will give you your inbound squawk code (see NOTAM 100031, Part 4 of 5). Then when you get to Mission 15 minutes later, contact Vancouver Monitor for the permission to enter the restricted airspace. (If you haven't filed a return flight plan, you have to file on the ground (cell) and wait 60 minutes, so this is why you want to pre-flile your plan and then simply activate it.)
Just a couple of final quick notes: be sure you're current on the intercept rules, and be sure you take your cell phone with you--in the event of a com failure, phone ATC at (604) 586-4560 or (604) 775-9531.
Keep on flying!! Enjoy your pie!!
